<br /> <br />R-12-'42 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE OPPOSITION OF THE CITY OF <br />PORTSMOUTH TO URANIUM MINING IN THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, a private corporation is seeking to lift a legislative moratorium on mining <br />uranium mining in Virginia so that the corporation may commence mining uranium at a facility <br />in Pittsylvania County, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, said location is within the watershed of the New River Valley, which feeds <br />Lake Gaston, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Lake Gaston supplies drinking water to a number of Hampton Roads <br />localities, including Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Suffolk, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Virginia Beach has had certain scientific studies made of this proposal, and <br />those studies show a degree of risk that mining uranium at that location could result in <br />contamination of the Lake Gaston water supply, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, a number of Virginia localities, including Virginia Beach, Norfolk, <br />Chesapeake, Suffolk, and also the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, have enacted <br />resolutions in opposition to lifting said moratorium, because of the risk for the region's water <br />supply, <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia: <br /> <br />1. That the City of Portsmouth is hereby officially opposed to lifting the present <br />moratorium on uranium mining. <br /> <br />2. That the City Manager is directed to have his staff monitor all developments on this <br />issue and to report to City Council as needed. <br /> <br />ADOPTED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, at a meeting held on <br />October 23,2012. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br />
