<br />R-12-08 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION APPROVING THE 2011 SOUTHSIDE HAMPTON ROADS <br />REGIONAL HAZARD MITIGATION PLAN TO REDUCE DAMAGES AND <br />SAVE LIVES IN THE EVENT OF A NATURAL DISASTER IN THE REGION. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in an effort to reduce the Nation's mounting natural disaster losses, <br />the U. S. Congress passed the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 that requires, in part, that <br />state and local governments develop a hazard mitigation plan in order to remain eligible <br />for pre- and post-disaster mitigation funding; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, such a plan provides a blueprint for helping localities reduce <br />damages and save lives in the event of a natural disaster in the region <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the 2006 Southside Hampton Roads Regional Hazard Mitigation <br />Plan ("Plan") was prepared in coordination with the Federal Emergency Management <br />Agency (FEMA) and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Plan was the result of a comprehensive planning process <br />undertaken by Isle of Wight County, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Smithfield, Suffolk, Virginia <br />Beach and Windsor that included regional meetings and public hearings; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, FEMA requires that Hazard Mitigation Plans must be updated and <br />approved by the local government every five years; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the 2011 Southside Hampton Roads Regional Hazard Mitigation <br />Plan is an updated and enhanced version of the original 2006 Southside Hampton Roads <br />Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan. <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia that it hereby adopts the 2011 Southside Hampton Roads RegionaL <br />Hazard Mitigation Plan to reduce damages and to save lives in the event of a natural <br />disaster in the region. <br /> <br />ADOPTED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia at a meeting held <br />on February 14,2012. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br />
