<br /> <br />R-12-54 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION REQUESTING GRANT ASSISTANCE FROM THE VIRGINIA DAM <br />SAFETY, FLOOD PREVENTION AND PROTECTION ASSISTANCE FUND FOR <br />ENGINEERING COSTS RELATED TO A DAM BREAK STUDY OF THE CITY'S LAKE <br />CAHOON DAM. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Portsmouth through its Department of Public Utilities owns and <br />operates three earthen dams, including the Lake Cahoon Dam, in the City of Suffolk that provide <br />drinking water to the City; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, dam safety regulations have changed that require certain improvements be <br />made to these three earthen dams to help prevent possible erosion or dam failure; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Virginia <br />Resources Authority administer the Virginia Dam Safety, Flood Prevention and Protection <br />Assistance Fund which provides grants to defray engineering and design costs for improvements <br />needed to meet current dam safety regulations; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City has been allocated a grant from this Fund in the amount of $5,200 to <br />defray the engineering costs of a dam break study for the Lake Cahoon Dam; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Grant Manual requires that City Council adopt a resolution requesting <br />assistance before any grant monies can be awarded and released; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the balance of the costs have been appropriated in the FY 2012-13 Public <br />Utilities Capital Improvements Fund. <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia that it hereby requests assistance in the amount of $5,200 to defray the costs of a dam break <br />study of the City's Lake Cahoon Dam, as required in the Grant Manual for the Virginia Dam Safety, <br />Flood Prevention and Protection Assistance Fund, and authorizes the City Manager and/or the <br />Director of Public Utilities to submit a grant application for monies available from said Fund and to <br />take such additional actions as may be required to secure said funds. <br /> <br />ADOPTED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia at a meeting held on <br />November 27,2012. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br />
