<br />R-10-04 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION CONCERNING THE PORTSMOUTH FALLEN HEROES <br />MEMORIAL FOUNDATION. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, over the years there have been numerous public safety officials of the City <br />of Portsmouth who have died in the line of duty, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, these officials lost their lives in the course of preserving public safety and <br />protecting the men, women, and children of this city, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, these officials are worthy of permanent, dignified, and appropriate <br />recognition for the sacrifices they made, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, there are numerous monuments that have been erected in many localities, <br />and also in some states and at the national level, to public safety officials who died in the line of <br />duty, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Portsmouth Fallen Heroes Memorial Foundation (the "Foundation") has <br />been created for the purpose of funding, developing, and maintaining such a monument in <br />Portsmouth, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, it is the intent of the Foundation to raise private funds for the construction <br />and maintenance of a Portsmouth Fallen Heroes Monument of appropriate dignity and stature, <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia: <br /> <br />1. The City hereby determines that it is in the public interest for the Foundation to fund, <br />develop, and maintain such a memorial, and the City commends the Foundation for its efforts <br />toward this end. <br /> <br />2. The City expresses its support in principle for having the monument on public <br />property at an appropriate location. <br /> <br />3. The City Manager and City Attorney are directed to work with the Foundation toward <br />the goals inherent in this resolution, and they shall report to Council from time to time about the <br />status of this matter, including the nature and location of the monument that is to be constructed. <br /> <br />ADOPTED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, at a meeting held on <br />February 23,2010. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br />
