<br />R-OB-37 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE SAILBOAT AS AN ICON FOR THE CITY <br />OF PORTSMOUTH. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, since its establishment in 1752, the City of Portsmouth has had <br />close economic and recreational ties with the watercraft that have plied the Elizabeth <br />River, in particular, the sailboat; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City now wishes to designate the sailboat, in its many forms and <br />designs, as an icon for the City of Portsmouth, to be used and incorporated by the City in <br />its marketing and publicity efforts; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City does not wish to affect or curtail private efforts(such as the <br />privately designed sailboat inspired by Barbara Vincent Hester and presented by <br />members of the Portsmouth Partnership and Vincent Hester Gallery) to utilize the <br />sailboat concept for private commercial and other purposes. <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia that it hereby designates the sailboat, in its many forms and designs, <br />as an icon for the City of Portsmouth to be utilized for such public purposes as may be <br />deemed appropriate. <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that private individuals and entities are <br />encouraged to utilize their creative efforts to bring attention and credit to their activities <br />and operations and to the City by the imaginative employment of the sailboat concept. <br /> <br />ADOPTED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia at a meeting held <br />on September 23, 2008. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br />
