<br />R-08-26 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION BY THE PORTSMOUTH CITY COUNCIL IN <br />SUPPORT OF THE PROPOSAL BY BON SECOURS HAMPTON <br />ROADS HEALTH SYSTEM TO CONSTRUCT AN ACUTE CARE <br />HOSPITAL IN THE CITY OF SUFFOLK AND TO DESIGNATE <br />MARYVIEW MEDICAL CENTER AS THE HUB OF THE LOCAL <br />BONSECOURSSYSTEM. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System has made a strong <br />commitment to provide health care services to the citizens of Portsmouth through <br />operation of Maryview Medical Center, Province Place at Maryview, the Bon Secours <br />Maryview Foundation Health Care Center, the Bon Secours Heart Institute, and other <br />critically important facilities; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Bon Secours Hampton Roads has operated Maryview since 1984, <br />and during that time, has invested millions of dollars in capital improvements and new <br />programs and services at the hospital; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Bon Secours has developed health care outreach programs, <br />including the Bon Secours Heart Institute, designed to meet the needs of all the residents <br />of Portsmouth and Western Hampton Roads; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, prominent residents of Portsmouth have served, and are serving <br />with distinction, on the Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System Board of Directors; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System employs thousands <br />of Portsmouth residents, and cares for tens of thousands of Portsmouth residents every <br />year; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, many employees and board members of Bon Secours have served in <br />important roles in the social, charitable, government and business life of the city over the <br />years; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Bon Secours and Maryview consistently have been outstanding <br />corporate citizens of Portsmouth, supporting the Portsmouth Partnership, the Virginia <br />Children's Museum, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and many other activities; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System has proposed an <br />acute care hospital to be developed adjacent to its current outpatient campus in Northern <br />Suffolk; and <br />
