<br />R-08-10 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE PORTSMOUTH POLICE <br />DEPARTMENT TO ALLOW AN AUXILIARY POLICE OFFICER WITH MORE <br />THAN 20 YEARS OF SERVICE TO PURCHASE HIS OR HER SERVICE <br />HANDGUN. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, auxiliary police officers are trained volunteers who serve without <br />pay to supplement the activities of the City's paid police department; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, their voluntary service is a valuable resource for the City and its <br />citizens; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, auxiliary police officers perform their law enforcement duties <br />faithfully for 20 or more years with limited recognition of their dedication; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, an auxiliary police officer's service handgun is a symbol and a <br />reminder to the officer of the seriousness of the officer's responsibilities and the hazards <br />encountered on a daily basis; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Section 59.1-148.3H of the Code of Virginia permits an auxiliary <br />police officer with more than 20 years of service to purchase his or her department-issued <br />handgun from the local police department, upon written authorization of the local <br />governing body. <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia that, in recognition and gratitude for the selfless and invaluable <br />services rendered by auxiliary police officers to the citizens of Portsmouth, the <br />Portsmouth Police Department is hereby authorized to sell to any auxiliary police officer <br />with more than 20 years of service that officer's department-issued service handgun at a <br />price of$1.00. <br /> <br />ADOPTED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia at a meeting held <br />on March 11, 2008. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br />
