<br />R-06-50 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE NAMING OF THE PORTION OF STATE <br />ROUTE 164 KNOWN AS THE WESTERN FREEWAY IN HONOR OF THE <br />LATE CONGRESSMAN NORMAN SISISKY. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the late Norman Sisisky served with distinction as a United States <br /> <br />congressman until his death in 2001; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, while Congressman Norman Sisisky was not a citizen of the City of <br /> <br />Portsmouth, he nevertheless represented the City in Washington with the interest and <br /> <br />dedication of a life-long resident; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Portsmouth Central Labor Council of the AFL-CIO has <br /> <br />proposed that the portion of State Route 164, known as the Western Freeway, be <br /> <br />officially designated as the "Norman Sisisky Memorial Highway" and has requested that <br /> <br />the City Council support such action; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City Council finds that this proposal is a fitting and lasting <br /> <br />tribute to a man who contributed in so many ways to the advancement and future of the <br /> <br />City of Portsmouth. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br /> <br />Portsmouth, Virginia that the City Council expresses its enthusiastic support for the <br /> <br />designation of the Western Freeway as "Norman Sisisky Memorial Highway." <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is directed to forward a copy <br /> <br />of this Resolution to each member of the Portsmouth delegation to the General Assembly <br /> <br />with a request that the delegation take the necessary steps to ensure creation of this <br /> <br />memorial to a true son of the Commonwealth of Virginia and friend to the citizens and <br /> <br />residents of the City of Portsmouth. <br />
