<br />R-06-44 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION APPROVING THE SOUTHS IDE HAMPTON ROADS <br />HAZARD MITIGATION PLAN TO REDUCE DAMAGES AND SAVE LIVES IN <br />THE EVENT OF A NATURAL DISASTER IN THE REGION. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in an effort to reduce the Nation's mounting natural disaster losses, <br />the U. S. Congress passed the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 that requires, in part, that <br />state and local governments develop a hazard mitigation plan in order to remain eligible <br />for pre- and post-disaster mitigation funding; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Southside Hampton Roads Hazard Mitigation Plan ( "Plan") was <br />prepared in coordination with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Virginia <br />Department of Emergency Management; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Plan is the result of a comprehensive planning process undertaken by <br />Isle of Wight County, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Smithfield, Suffolk, Virginia Beach and Windsor that <br />included regional meetings and public hearings. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Plan provides a blueprint for helping localities reduce damages and <br />save lives in the event of a natural disaster in the region. <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia that it hereby adopts the Southside Hampton Roads Hazard <br />Mitigation Plan to reduce damages and to save lives in the event of a natural disaster in <br />the region. <br /> <br />ADOPTED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia at a meeting held <br />on August 22, 2006. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br />
