<br />R-05-55 <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE CITY COUNCIL'S CONTINUING <br />SUPPORT FOR THE PLANNED EXPANSION OF THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM <br />OF VIRGINIA. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Children's Museum of Virginia was originally designed as and has been <br />a successful anchor for the renovation of Downtown Portsmouth; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Children's Museum of Virginia has also been a strong educational <br />institution that encourages imagination, questioning, and a lifelong love of learning, with <br />exhibits that tie into the Standards of Learning (SOL) requirements for students in Portsmouth <br />Public Schools and beyond <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Children's Museum of Virginia, which welcomed more than 165,000 <br />visitors in 2004, including 20,000 Portsmouth residents and students, is much more than a <br />regional museum, with a strong market across the Commonwealth of Virginia, and annual <br />visitors from every State in the Union and beyond; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the planned expansion of the Children's Museum of Virginia was included <br />in the non-appropriated subsequent planning years of the City's Capital Improvement Program <br />approved by City Council on May 3, 2005; and <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Portsmouth City Council's support for the planned expansion continues <br />to be unwavering, and City Council intends to provide funds for the project as part of the Capital <br />Improvements budget process for FY 2009 and subsequent years, <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia that this resolution serve as an expression of City Council's continuing support for the <br />planned expansion for the Children's Museum of Virginia and of City Council's intention to <br />support the project financially within the upcoming Capital Improvements budget process for FY <br />2009 and in subsequent years. <br /> <br />ADOPTED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia at a meeting held on <br />September 27,2005. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />
