AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND CHAPTER 22 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF <br />PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA (1988) BY AMENDING SECTION 22-15 THEREOF, <br />PERTAINING TO THE STOPPING OF VEHICLES BY LAW ENFORCEMENT <br />OFFICIALS. <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia: <br /> <br /> i That Section 22-I5 of the Code of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia (1988) be, and <br />hereby is, mended and reordained as follows: <br /> <br />Sec. 22-15. Police officials may stop vehicles for inspection or to secure information; limited <br />authority of Sheriff and deputy sheriffs to stop for weight inspection and information. <br /> <br /> Any policeman who shall be in uniform or who shall exhibit his badge or other sign of <br />authority shall have the right to stop any motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer, upon request or <br />signal, for the purpose of inspecting the motor vehicle, trailer or semitrailer as to its equipment <br />and operation, its manufacturer's serial number, its content, its load, or its weight, if such motor <br />vehicle, trailer or semitrailer is a property-carrying vehicle or for the purpose of securing such <br />other information as may be necessary. The Sheriff or any deputy sheriff shall also have the <br />right to stop any such motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer, but only for the limited purpose of <br />inspecting and obtaining information as to its weight. <br /> <br />2. That this ordinance shall take effect on the date of its adoption. <br /> <br /> ADOPTED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth.
