A_N ORDINANCE TO A~RND CHAPTER 8 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF PORTS- <br />MOUTH, VIRGINIA, 1951. AS ANIENDED, BY ADDING THERETO SECTIONS <br />8-t.13~1 THROUGH S-1.13oS, INCLUSIVE, ESTABLISHING DATES WILEN <br />TAXES ON REAL ESTATE AND PERSONAL PROPERTY ARE DME AND PROVIDING <br />PENALTIES AND INTEREST C~RGES FOR LATE PAYN~NTS. <br /> <br /> Be it ordained by the Council of the City of Portsmouth. Virginia, that <br />Chapter 8 of the Code of the City of Portsmouth~ Virginia, 1951, as amended~ <br />be amended by adding thereto Sections 8-1o13.1 through 8-1o13.6, inclusive~ <br />to read as follow: <br /> <br />Section 8-1o13.1. When city taxes on real estate due and payable° <br /> <br /> City taxes on real estate for each year shall be due and payable during <br />the year for which the same are assessed in four equal installments, as follows: <br />one-fourth thereof on March thirty-first, one-fourth thereof on June thirtieth, <br />one-fourth thereof on September thirtieth and one-fourth thereof on December <br />fifth of said year. <br /> <br />Section 8-1.t3,2o Penalties when city real estate taxes not paid on time. <br /> <br /> In the event any installment of taxes on real estate is not paid on or <br />before the time the same is due and payable there shall be added thereto a <br />pel~alty of five per cent of the amount of such unpaid installment, and such <br />installment shall bear interest of one-half of one per cen~ per month, or <br />fFaetion thereof, fro~ the date the same is due and payable until paid. <br /> <br /> Should any installment of taxes on real estate be no~ paid before the <br />property is advertised or posted as delinquent, an expense charge of ~wenty- <br />fiv~ cents for each installmen~ on each parcel assessed shall be collected. <br /> <br />Section 8-1.13.3. When city taxes on personal property and machinery <br /> payable; interest on such taxes. <br /> <br /> City taxes on personal property and mach%nery shall be paid on or before <br />the fifth day of December of the year in which said zaxes are assessed, and <br />shall bear interest at the rate of one-half of one per cent per month, or <br />fraction thereof, from the date the same is due and payable until paid. <br /> <br />Section 8-1.13.4. Penalty for non-payment of taxes on personal property <br /> and machinery, <br /> <br /> In the event any ~axes on personal property or machinery are not paid on <br />or before the time the same are due and payable there shall be added thereto <br />a penalty of five per cent of such unpaid taxes. <br /> <br />Section 8-1o13.5. Notice, <br /> <br /> The City Treasurer shall, at least fifteen days prior to the time any <br />city taxes are due, or any installment thereon, give public notice by advertise- <br />ment in two of the daily newspapers published in the city of the due date for <br />such taxes and the penalties for failure to pay same when due. <br /> <br /> <br />
