AN ORDINA~NCE PROVIDING FOR ~LE CLASSIFICATION OP <br />,~ND & CONPENSATION P~ FOR FII~N Ah~D POLICE~N OF ~ CITY <br /> <br />Be it ordained by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia <br /> <br />Section 1o Employees Classified. <br /> <br /> On and after Januery 1, 19~3 all Firemen and Policemen of the City of <br />Portsmouth shall be clmssified according to their rank and thezr co~ensation <br />shall be fixe~ according ~o such rank held0 <br /> <br />Section 2. Rates of Compensation. <br /> <br /> The basic salary or compensation of each Fireman and Policeman until <br />otherwise changed by Ordinance, shall be according to ~he schedule of pay herein- <br />after set forth designated as Schedule A and made a part of thzs Ordinance except <br />that men zn the Police Departmen~ required ~o wear civilian clothes w~ll be allowed <br />an additional twenty dollars ($20.00) per month as a clothing aliowance~ <br /> <br />Section 3. Application to Pre~en3 Firemen and Policeme!:. <br /> <br /> All Firemen a~d Po!tcemel] of ~lle City shall recelve the same compensaLlo!~ <br />according to their cl~ssificataon as set forth ~ Schedule A of this Ordinance. An_y <br />Fireman or Policeman of the ~ity who is at ~ne effective date of this Ordinance <br />recelving less than the amount provided for in tae schedule for his class of employ- <br />ment shall on and after January 1~ 196~, receive the amount set forth in the schedule° <br />Any Fireman or Policeman who ~s Feceiv!ng on the effective date of this Ordinance, <br />more than the amount he would be entitled to receive under said schedule, shall con- <br />tinue at the same salary until his years of zervice shall entitle him 5o an ancrease <br />in compensation. <br /> <br />Section ~ New Employees. <br /> <br /> Any person hereafter employed by t~e City shall receive compensation during <br />5ne first, second, third and fourth years of his employment as set forth zn Schedule A <br />of this Ordinance. No employee shall receive compensation provided for in the Eenth <br />year until completion of ~en full years of servzce. <br /> <br />Section 5. Promotions. <br /> <br /> For the purpose of computing compensation under Schedule A of this Ordinance <br />during the first year only of employmen~ in an~ higher rank, any fireman or policeman <br />promoted to a higher rank during the second, third or fourth year of his employment, <br />shall be deemed to be in the first, second or third year respectively, of his employ- <br />ment, and any fireman or policeman promoted to a hi~er rank during or after the <br />fifth year of his employment shall be deemed ~o be in the fourth year of his employ- <br />ment. <br /> <br />Section 8, Demotions. <br /> <br /> Any Firem~n or Policeman who is demoted to m lower class shall receiwe <br />compensation according to the rank in which he ~s placed. <br /> <br /> <br />
