AN ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR THE CLASSIFICATION OF EMPLOYMENT AND A COMPENSATION PL/~i FOR EMPLOYEES OF THE CITY. Be it ordained by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia: Section 1. Employees Classified. On and after July 1, 1966, all employees or'the City of Portsmouth shall be classified according to the kind and type of.work performed by them, and their compensation shall be fixed according to shch classification. Section 2. Rates of Compensation. The basic salary or compensation of each employee until otherwise changed by ordinance shall be according to the Basic Pay Schedule, hereinafter referred to as the schedule, and which is a part of this ordinance. Section 3. ~pplication to Present'Employees. Ail employees of the City shall receive compensatidn according to their classification as set forth in the schedule. Any employee of the Ciiy who is at the effective date of this ordinance receiving less than the amount provided for in the schedule for his range of employment, shall, beginning with the first day of the first pay period com~mencing on or after July 1, t966, as appropriate, and thereafter, receive the amount set forth in the schedule. Any employee who is receiving more on the effective date of this ordinance than the amount he would be entitled to receive under the schedule, shall continue at the same salary until his years~of service shall enti~te him to an increase in compensation. Section 4. New ~mplovees, Promotions and Pay Increases. The several classifications of employment shall be divided into pay ranges as s~ forth in the schedule. Unless otherwise provided herein, an employee sk~l receive the compensation set forth in the schedule under steps 1, 2 and $ durin~ the first, second and third years, respectively, of his emplo,~ent in that range automatically.
