Sec. 18-82. Police, fire-fightirg and rescue vehicles ~ ambulances ex~ <br /> enpt from regulations in certain emergencies, exceptions ~ <br /> ~!tional req~ireuents. <br /> <br /> (a) The operator of C l) any <br />rudder the direction of a police officer ~_u the chase <br />violators of the law or persons <br />violation, (2) any vehicle used for the <br />irg publicly owned State <br />ponse to a fire alarm or <br />tical subdivion of the <br />response to a fire alarm or an <br />rescue or life saving vehicle designed or <br />poses of supplying resuscitation <br />e~gered, whether such <br />profit corporation or <br />the performance of <br />under emergency cor~_itions, may, <br />prosecution: <br /> <br /> (1) Proceed past red sign~l, light, stop sign or device indicating <br />moving traffic shall stop if the speed and m.ovement of the vehicle is re- <br />duced and controlled so ~hat it C~ pass a signal~ light or' deVice with <br />due regard to the safety Of person~ and prOperty. ~' ~ ~ <br /> <br />- (2) Park or stand no~vithstar~iing the provisions of tkis chapter. <br /> <br /> (3) Disregard regulations governing a direction of movement of ve- <br />hicles turning in specified directions so ~lorg as . the ~ operator does not <br />endanger life or property. <br /> <br /> (4) Pass or overtake, with due regard to the safety of persons and <br />property, another vehicle at any intersection. <br /> <br /> (b) These exemptions, hereinbefore granted to such a moving vehicle, <br />shall apply only when the operator of such vehicle displays a flashirg, <br />blinking, or laternating red light* and sounds a ~iren, exhaust whistle, <br />or ~1r horn designed to give antcmatically intermittent signals, as ~ <br />be reaso.r~ly necessary, and, only when there is in force ar~ e~fec~ f~r <br />sus~h~ vehicle standard automobile liability insurance covering injury Or <br />death to any person in the sum of at least fifty thousard dollar~ b~cause <br />of bedily injury to or death of one person in any one accident and subject <br />to the limit for one person to a limit of three hundred thousand do]]srs <br />because of bodily injury to or death of two or more persons in any one <br />accident, ar~ to a limit of five thousand dollars because of injury to <br />or destruction of property of others in any one aCcident~ Such ex~nptions <br />shall not, however, prOtect the operator of any such vehicle from criminal <br />prosecution for conduct constituting reckless disregard of the safety of <br />persons and property. Nothing in this section shall be construed to re- <br />lease the operator of ar~ such ve~icle from civil liability for failure <br />to use reasonable care in such operation. <br /> <br /> <br />
