Section 4. Application to bresent firemen and policemen. On and after July 1, !969~ all persons who are e~loyed as firemen and policemen on that date shall be paid cor~ensation according to their far, and the appropriate step ~t~_in such rare< as set forth in the schedule of pay. Steps !, 2, 3~ 4, 5~ 6, and !0 of the schedule of pay shall respond to the first~ second, t~h~.~.~ fourth, fifth~ sixth and tenth years of er~loymer~ in such depa_~tment. Sectio~ 5.
