See. 18-231. Illegal sirer~s, ~istles, etc.; ~unlawful use of warning devices; exceptions. (a) Ir'shall be unlawful for stay v~n~cle to be eouipped with or for any person to uss upon any vehicle any Siren or emhau~t~ compression or spark plug whistle or ~orn except as ~y be authorized in this chapter. It shall be ~s~ful for any vehicle to be equipped with or for any person to ~use amy war~g d~vice while upon a ~way or stay way open to public travel that is not of a type that has bee~ approved by the Superintenden~ or for any person at say time to use a horn othe~ise than as a reasonable warraing or to make any unnecesss~y or ~rmreasonably loud or harsh Sound by means of a horn or other ws_rming de~ce~ except that the v~hicles of c~n~ro~ carriers or extraordin~ily large and hea~y vehicles may be equip- ped ~ith such type of warming de,ice as the S ~uper~ntendent may require or permit. (h) Notwithstanding the provisions of this cha~ter, a siren, bell or supplemental horn may be used on a vehicle as a no~ semaker for sm alarm system provided the de~ice is instsf[led so as to ~rokibit act~atie~ of the system by the driver while the vehicle is in motion. Sec. i8-23~. Warning devices on school buses; use thereof, (a) Every bus used for the principal purpose of trs~ns~ortirg school children shall be equipped with a warming device of such t~pe as may be prescribed by the state board after consultation ~ith the super- intendent of state police. Such a warring device shall indicate when such bus is stopped, is about to stop, ~nd when it is te~ki~ ~n _or dis- charging c~ildren. Such warr~_~ device shall be ased and in operation for a dists-nce of not less ths~u one ho~dred feet before ~ny pr-oposed stop of such bus if the lawful speed limit is less than thirty-five miles per hour, e~nd for a distance of at least two handred feet before ~ny pro- posed stop of such bus if the lawful speed l~mit is thirty-fi~e ~Ales per hour or more. (a 1) Failure of warming device to function on s_n~ school bus snal_, no~ relieve any person operati~ ~ ~ a me~o~ vehicle from his duty to stop as provided in Section 18-4i(f). (b) Any person operatirg sucln bus who fails or refuses to equip such vehicle being driven by b~m ~th such equipmez~.t, or %~ino fails to use such warning devices in the operation of such vehicle ~ shall be guilty of a misdemear, or~ ~nd shall~ on conviction~ be fLned not less than five dollars nor more than twenty-five dollars.
