AN ORDINANCE TO A~'~ND TRE CODE OF TIIE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIR- <br />GINIA, 1961, BY ADDING TO CHAPTER 10 THERe]OF, A NEW'ARTICLE <br />NU~BERED XVII, CONSISTING OF NINE NEW SECTIONS, NUMBERED <br />128 THROUGH 10-136, INCLUSIVE, LEVYING AND IMPOSING A TAX ON <br />TRANSIENTS OBTAINING LODGING WITHIN THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, <br />FIXING THE RATE OF SAID TAX, PROVIDING FOR THE PA~4ENT AND <br />COLLECTION THEREOF, PROVIDING FOR PENALTIES FOR THE VIOLATION <br />THEREOF. <br /> <br /> Be it ordained by the Council of the City of Ports- ' <br />mouth, Virginia: <br /> <br />1. That the Code of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, 1961, <br />be amended by adding to Chapter 10 thereof, a new Article <br />numbered XVII, consisting of nine new sections, numbered <br />10-128 through 10-136, inclusive, such new Article to read as <br />follows: <br /> <br />ARTICLE XVII <br /> <br />TAX ON TRANSIENTS OBTAINING LODGING WITHIN THE CITY. <br /> <br />Sec. 10-128. Definitions. <br /> <br /> Except where the context clearly indicates a different <br />meaning, the following words and phrases, when used in this article, <br />shall, for the purpose of this article, have the following res- <br />pective meanings: <br /> <br /> CITY TREASURER. "City Treasurer" means the treasurer <br />of the city and any of his duly authorized deputies and agents. <br /> <br /> C055~ISSIONER OF T}~ REVENUE. "Commissioner of the <br />revenue" means the commissioner of the revenue of the'city and <br />any of the duly authorized deputies and agents. <br /> <br /> DAY. "Day" shall mean any twenty-four hour peried or <br />portion thereof for which a room rental charge is made, <br /> <br /> HOTEL. '~Hotel" means any public or private hotel, inn, <br />hostelry, tourist home or house, motel, rooming house or other <br />lodging place within ~xe city offering lodging as defined in this <br />section, for compensation, to any transient as defined in this <br />section. <br /> <br /> LODGING. "Lodging" means the services, meals, food, <br />board, lodging or space furnished any transient. <br /> <br /> <br />
