Exhaust system in good working order required. <br /> <br /> (a) No person shall drive and no owner of a motor <br />vehicle shall permit or allow the operation of any owned vehicle <br />upon a highway unless such motor vehicle is equipped with an <br />exhaust system of a type installed as standard factory equip- <br />ment, or comparable to that designed for use upon the particular <br />vehicle as standard factory equipment, in good working order and <br />in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise, <br />annoying smoke and escape of excessive gas, steam or oil. An <br />exhaust system shall not be deemed to prevent excessive or un- <br />usual noise if it permits or allows the escape of noise in <br />excess of that permitted by the standard factory equipment <br />exhaust system of private passenger motor vehicles or trucks of <br />standard make. <br /> <br /> (b) The term "exhaust system," as used in this section, <br />means all the parts of a motor vehicle through which the exhaus=. <br />passes after leaving the engine block. <br /> <br /> (c) Chambered pipes shall not be deemed to be an <br />effective muffling device to prevent excessive or unusual <br />noise as required in section (a). <br /> <br />Section 18-251. Fastening load of logs, barrels, etc. <br /> <br /> No vehicle which is designed or used for the purpose <br />of hauling logs, poles or lumber, barrels, hogsheads or other <br />materials or containers which by their nature may shift or <br />roll, shall be operated or moved over any highway unless its <br />load is securely fastened by adequate log chains, metal cables, <br />nylon webbing, steel straps or other restraining devices, so <br />as to prevent the shifting or falling of such load from the <br />vehicle, provided, however, that tobacco hogsheads may, in <br />lieu of chains or metal cables, be secured by manila or <br />hemp rope of such strength as to fasten securely the hogshead <br />against shif.ting, falling, or rolling, and in any case of <br />less than five-eights inch in diameter. <br /> <br /> Nothing in this section shall be construed to release <br />the owner or operator from liability for failure to use reason- <br />able care in securing or fastening said load from shifting <br />or falling. <br /> <br /> 2.
