AN ORDINANCE TO AI~END THE CODE OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, ViR- <br />GINIA, 1961, BY REPEALING SECTIONS 2-57.1, 2-57.7 AND 2-57.8 <br />THEREOF AND BY AMENDING SECTIONS 2-51, 2-57.3 AND 2-57.4 PER- <br />TAINING TO THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY. <br /> <br /> Be it ordained by the Council of the City of Ports- <br />mouth, Virginia: <br /> <br /> 1. That the code of the City of Portsmouth, Vir- <br />ginia, 1961, by amended by r~pealing sections 2-57.1, 2-57.7 <br />and 2-57.8 thereof. <br /> <br /> 2. That the code of the City of Portsmouth, Vir- <br />ginia, 1961, be amended and reordained to read as follows: <br /> <br />Sec. 2-51. Establishment of department; appointment, <br /> powers and duties of director. <br /> <br /> There shall be a department of the city government <br />known and designated as the department of public safety, which <br />shall be under the control and supervision of a director of <br />public safety, who may be appcinted by the city manager and <br />shall be subject to his direction and control. The director <br />of public safety shall have direct and immediate supervision <br />over the police and fire divisions of the city and shall also <br />perform such other duties as may be assigned to him by the <br />city manager. If there be no director of public safety ap- <br />pointed, the city manager shall act as such. <br /> <br />Sec. 2-57.3. Same composition; uniforms; organization <br /> rules and regulations. <br /> <br /> The director of public safety shall appoint as auxi- <br />liary policemen as many pers0~s 6f good character as he shall <br />deem necessary, not to exceed 100, and their appointment shall <br />be revokable at any time by the director. The director shall <br />have the authority to prescribe the uniform, organization and <br />such rules and regulations as he shall deem necessary for the <br />operation of the auxiliary police force. <br /> <br />Sec. 2-57.4. Same - when called into service; members to <br /> wear uniforms while on duty. <br /> <br /> The director of public safety or the chief of police <br />may call into service such auxiliary policemen as may be deemed <br />necessary, (1) in time of ~ublic emergency, (2) at such times <br />as there are insufficient number of regular policemen to preserve <br /> <br /> <br />
