AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE CODE OF THE C'ITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIR- <br />GINIA, 1961, BY AMENDING SECTION 2-36 THEREOF PERTAINING TO <br />LEGAL HOLIDAYS FOR CITY EMPLOYEES. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Portsmouth is authorized to en- <br />act as ordinances certain statutes from the Code of Virginia, <br />provided such ordinances are substantially consistent with the <br />state law; and <br /> WHEREAS, the General Assembly of Virginia at its <br />1973 session amended certain of those statutes of the Code of <br />Virginia, 1950; and <br /> WHEREAS, it is therefore necessary to amend a certain <br /> section of the Code of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, 1961, <br /> so as to make said section conform .to the changes in the Code <br /> of Virginia enacted by the General Assembly at its 1973 session. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the council of the <br /> City of Portsmouth, Virginia: <br /> 1. That the Code of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, <br /> 1961, be amended by amending Section 2-36 thereof, such amended <br /> section to read as follows: <br /> <br /> Section 2-36. Legal Holidays - generally. <br /> The following daysare designated .as legal holidays <br /> for all employees of the City) except policemen and firefighters <br /> and those engaged in such employment as necessarily requires their <br /> daily services, and for all state officers performing duties for <br /> the City: The first day of January (New Years Day), the third <br /> Monday in February (George Washington Day), the last Monday in <br /> May (Memorial Day), the fourth day of July (Independence Day), <br /> the first Monday in September (Labor Day), the eleventh day of <br /> November (Veterans Day), the fourth Thursday in November (Thanks- <br /> giving Day) and the twenty-fifth day of December (christmas Day); <br /> provided however, that whenever any of the aforesaid holidays <br /> shall fall on a Saturday, they shall be observed on the preced- <br /> ing Friday, and whenever they shall fall on a Sunday, they shall <br /> be observed on the following Monday. <br /> <br /> No other holidays shall be observed by either state <br /> employees partly engaged in city work or by city employees, ex- <br /> cep~ when special occasions are authorized bY the City Manager. <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Vir- <br /> ginia, at a meeting held July 10, 1973. <br /> <br /> <br />
