Creditable service. The term "creditable service" shall <br />be taken to mean for any member the most recent period of continu- <br />ous service as an employee rendered by the member; provided, how- <br />ever, that continuous service shall not be considered to have been <br />interrupted by any periodor periods of authorized leave of ab- <br />sence or by any period or periods of service in the armed forces <br />of the United States which did not give rise to termination of <br />membership in the system. <br /> <br /> Employee. The word "employee" shall be taken to mean <br />any person regu!~rly employed in the service of the city on a full <br />time permanent basis and whose compensation is wholly paid by the <br />city, and persons holding offices in the city required by the Con- <br />stitution of this state and their deputies, assistants and employees <br />employed on a full time permanent basis and whose compensation is <br />paid partly by the city and partly by the state, but shall not in- <br />clude any person who is eligible for membership in the Virginia <br />Retirement System or in any other retirement or pension system es- <br />tablished by the city. In case of doubt the Board shall decide <br />who is an employee within the meaning of this article. <br /> <br /> ~ployer. The word '~employer" shall be taken to mean <br />the city or the authority of the city having the power to appoint <br />an employee to office or employment. <br /> <br /> Examiner. The word "examiner" shall be taken to mean <br />the medicat examiners provided for in section 26-18. <br /> <br /> Maxim~ retirement age. The term "maximum retirement <br />age" shall be taken to mean age sixty-six during the calendar <br />year 1973, and age sixty-five during and after the calendar year <br />1974. <br /> <br /> Member. The word "member" shall be taken to mean any <br />employee who has been included in the membership of the .system as <br />provided in section 26-19, and whose membership has not terminated <br />under the provisions of section 26-20. <br /> <br /> Normal retirement date. The term "normal retirement <br />date" shall be taken to mean the first of the month next follow- <br />ing or coinciding with the sixty-fifth birthday of a member. <br /> <br /> Retir~ent allowance. The term "retirement allowance" <br />shall be taken to mean the retirement payments to which a member <br />is entitled as provided in this article. <br /> <br /> Service.
