have b~s retirement allowance payable under any one of the at~plicable <br />options set forth in this section in lieu of the retirement allowance <br />that would otherwise be payable to b/re. Tb~ amount of any such optional <br />retirement allowance shall be the actuarial equivalent of the amount of <br />the retirement allowance that would Otherwise be payable to him. The <br />member shall make any such election by written request tothe board and <br />such election shall be subject to the apprOval of the board. <br /> <br /> (1) Joint and Last SurviVOr option. The member may elect to <br />receive a decrease~ retir~nent allowance during his lffetime and having <br />much decreased allowance, or a designated fraction thereof, continued <br />after his death to his spouse during the subsequent lifetime of such <br />spouse, provided, however, that if the member's retirement is for dis- <br />ability, the election of the retirement allowance to be continued after <br />the member's death shall be limited to a maxirm/~ of one-half of the de- <br />creased retirement allowance received by the member during his lifetime. <br /> <br /> (2) Social Security option. If a msmber retires prior to t~s <br />no~al retirement date, he my elect to receive an increased re~t <br />allowance up to his noImal retirement date and a decreased retirement <br />allowance thereafter, thereby providing a more nearly level retirement <br />incc~e when such decreased retirement allowance is added tQ his anticipated <br />primary benefits under the Social Security Act. <br /> <br /> (3) Other options. The msmber may elect sc~e other combination <br />of benefits to the member and/or to such other beneficiary or beneficiaries <br />as the ms~ber shall designate, provided, however~ that if the member's <br />retirement is for disability, the election of the retir~ent allo%~u/ce <br />to be continued after the member's death sh~dld be limited to a maximum <br />of one-half of the decreased retir~T~nt sl]c~ance received by the msmber <br />during his lifetime. <br /> <br /> CD} The election by a member of any one of the options stated in <br />this section shall be null and void if the rm~n%~_r dies prior to retirement, <br />and the election by a member of the joint and last surviver option shall <br />be null and void if the designated beneficiary dies before the member <br />has retired. <br /> <br /> (c) A m~mber who has elected any one of the options stated in this <br />section may, at any t/me prior to the later of the effective date of the <br />member's retirement or the date of written notification to the beard of <br />retir~mant of the m~ber, revoke such an election by written notification <br />to the heard. <br /> <br />Section 31-156. Ordinary death benefits. <br /> <br /> Should a member die in service frc~ a cause that is determined not <br />cc~pensable under the Virginia Workman's Compensation Act, death beu~fits <br />shall be payable as follows: <br /> <br /> <br />
