AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND SECTION 7-34 AND SECTION 7-35 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY. OF PORTSMOUTH, 1973. AS AMENDED~ PERTAINING TO CEMETERIES~ BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that Section 7-34 and Section 7-35 of the Code of the City of Portsmouth~ Virginia, 1973, as amended, shall read as follows: Section 7-34. Monuments. (a) Not more than one monument may be erected in any lot in ~ny city cemetery. Any stone that projects more than twenty-four [24) inches above the grade of a lot shall be deemed to be a monument. (b) In no city cemetery~shall any monument be permitted in ~ny lot or fractional part of any lot having a surface area of less than one hundred twenty-eight [128) square feet. (c) In city cemeteries, all monuments shall be set in the center of the lot. (d) Foundations for monuments must be of solid masonry, solid concrete or a concrete cap over concrete columns (to be ±nstalled in accordance with an administrative directive of the City Manager) of a sufficient number to sustain the weight of the m~nument. All such foundations for monuments must be laid not less than four (4) feet below the grade of the lot. (e) The area of the top of all such foundations shall be at least equal to that of the base of the superstructure. Section 7-35. Gravestones. NO gravestone in any city cemetery shall be less than four (4) nor more than twelve (12) inches thick, nor more than twenty-four ~24) inches in width, nor shall~any such stone project more than six (6) inches above the grade of the lot in which it is set, or be set so as to rest on the brickwork of the grave, nor shall more than one stone be permitted for any grave. Every such stone shall be set on a foundation of solid masonry or solid concrete or a concrete cap over concrete columns (to be installed in accordance with an administrative directive of the City Manager) of a sufficient number to sustain the weight of the gravestone, and the area of the top surface of such foundation shall be at least equal to that of the base of the superstructure. All such foundations must be laid to a depth of not less than four (4) feet.
