1979-5 <br /> <br />AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE CODE OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, <br />VIRGINIA, 1973, BY AMENDING SECTION 35-58 THEREOF, PERTAINING <br />TO THE BOARD OF EQUALIZATION. <br /> <br /> BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />~inia: <br /> <br /> 1. That Section 35-58 of the Code' of the City of Ports <br />mouth, Virginia, 1973, be amended and reordained to read as <br />follows: <br /> <br />Section 35-58. Board of equalization. <br /> <br /> (a} ESTABLISHED. There shall be a board of equalization <br />as provided in Section 2.12 of Chapter 471 of the Acts of the <br />General Assembly of Virginia, 1970. <br /> <br /> (b) COMPENSATION OF MEMBERS. The members of the board <br />of equalization shall receive such per diem compensation for <br />the time they are actually engaged in %he duties of their <br />office at the rate of fifty dollars [$50.00) per day, and <br />such per diem compensation may be limited to such nu:n~ber df <br />days as in the jud~.ent of the Council is sufficient foz the <br />work of such board-in any calendar year. <br /> <br /> (c) REARINGS. The board of equalization shall proceed <br />to hold its hearings during the months of March and April in <br />each year and shall conside~ all assessments originally made <br />by the City Assessor during the i2 month period an-d on the <br />31st day of January last ensuing, giving precedenc~ in order <br />of hearing to those assessments effective for the current <br />tax year. <br /> <br /> 2.
