AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE CODE OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, <br />VIRGINIA, 1973, BY ADDING TO CHAPTER 12 THEREOF ARTICLE <br />III PERTAINING TO SMOKE DETECTORS. <br /> <br /> BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia: <br /> <br /> 1. That the Code of the City of Portsmouth,.Virginia, <br />1973, be ~ended, by adding to Chapter 12 thereof Article III, <br />such new Article to read as follows: <br /> <br />ARTICLE III. Smoke Detectors <br /> <br />Section 12-66. Whore required. <br /> <br /> Smoke detectors shall be installed in all of the following- <br />structures: <br /> <br /> (a) Multi-family residential buildings containing four <br />(4) or'more dwelling units. <br /> <br /> (b) Hotels or motels providing overnight sleeping <br />accommodations to one (1) or more persons. <br /> <br /> (c) Group homes, dormitories and.other public lodgings <br />regularly used to provide overnight sleeping 'accommodations <br />which contain moro than four (4) sleeping rooms. <br /> <br />Section 12-67. Definitions. <br /> <br /> (a) SMOKE DETECTORS - shall mean mechanical devices <br />powered by batteries or alternating current capable of sounding <br />an audible alarm upon sensing visible or invisible products of <br />combustion and which meetthe specifications as contained in <br />that pamphlet known as Underwriters Laboratories Fire Protection <br />Equipment Directory, dated ~anuary 1981, a copy of ~hich is <br />on file in the office of the Bureau of Fire Prevention. <br /> <br /> (b) OWNER - shall mean one (1) or more persons, jointly or <br />severally; in whom is vested: <br /> <br />{1) Ail or part of the legal title to the property, <br /> <br />or <br /> <br /> (2) All or part of the beneficial ownership and <br />a right to present use and enjoyment of the premises, and <br />the term includes a mortgagee in possession. <br /> <br /> <br />
