~fHER~AS, on July 10, 1962~ this body in a formal resolu*~ion <br />requested the Virginia State Highway Department to design a (new) portion <br />of F.A.P. Route 24 for improvement under the federal urban ai~ program; <br />and <br /> <br /> WHHREAS, on July 10, 1962, the eastern terminus of said~rban <br />aid route was Federal Route 58 at the intersection of Washington Street <br />and High Street; and <br /> <br /> ~HHR~As, on August 25, 1962, theVirginia State Highway Cc~mission <br />voted to reroute U. S. Route S8 from the Do~mtown ~lizabeth River Tunnel to <br />the Midtown Htizab~th River TunneI,' deleting the highway route designation <br />from High Street between~lm'Avenue and. Washington Street and from WashingtOn <br />Street between Hig~ Street and the Downt~Wfi glizabeth RiYer Tunnel, thus <br />eliminating the official terminus,o~ F.A~P. Route 2~, noted above; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, ~his body offi¢ially on March 13, 1962, (pursuant to the <br />Code of Virginia relative'to local planning} and mn July 26, 196~, in a <br />document addressed ~o the State Highway Commission, resolved to wo~ for the <br />northerly extension of George Washington Highway into Effingham Street so as <br />to create one major' north-south highway in eastern Portsmouth, and that said <br />objective has beenand is recognized as a major component of the officia~ <br />Comprehensive Plan of the City Of Portsmouth. <br /> <br /> NO~;, THER~FOR~ BE IT R~SOL~D by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia: <br /> <br /> (a) THAT, paragraph (a) of said resolution of July i0, 1962, be <br />amended to read as f~tlows: "That the State Highway Department be and the <br />same hereby is requested to survey and design that portion of F.A. Po Route 24 <br />from High Street and Hamilton Avenue along Hamilton Avenue, Glasgow Street and <br />London Street ~to Effingham~Stree~, destined by official plan to become the <br />northerly extension of George WaShington Highway." <br /> <br /> (h)~ ~tAT, the State H~ghway Department is urged to proceed with the <br />routing of State Ro~te 141to ifiOlude Hffingham Street from Portsmouth Boutevar~C <br />to London Street, and the deletionof Alternate Route 46OA from Washington Street, <br />as indicated in a letter of ~y~22, 1962, from Department of Highways~ so that the <br />City of Portsmouth and ~he ~. S~ Navy can without further delay proceed with <br />formulation of plans td ef~ectu~t~ the-northerly extension of George }~ashington <br />Highway into ~ffingham Street mid the improvement thereof as a feeder highway <br />linking InterState 264 Wit~ the a. S. Naval' Hospilal'and the U. S.
