t41E_REAS, Councilman R. Irvine Smith served as Mayor <br />of the City of POrtsmouth for eigh~ years from 1960 to 1968; <br /> <br /> Wh~EAS, the said R. Irvine Smith devoted a gr~eat <br />deal of time and effort to the performance of his duties~as <br />Mayor; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, many worthwhile ~rojects for the city were <br />accomplished and strong bonds of friendship with military a~d <br />naval personnel located in the a~ea were forged during these <br />years of tireless and unselfish service~ and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this Council will st~l have the benefit of ~ <br />the wisdom and advice of the saidR. Irvine Smith because of his <br />continued service to this City. as a memb6r of this body. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the <br />City of Portsmouth, Virginia, in session assembled~on this 9th <br />day of July, 1968, that the valuable contribution to the progress <br />of the City made by Councilman R. Irvine Smiththrough his years <br />of service as Mayor be acknowledged with sincere gratitude, and <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution <br />be presented to Councilman R. Irvine Smith, and that it be made <br />a part of the permanent records of the City Council. <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
