RESOLUTION BEQUEST~G ~HE VIRGINIA DEPAR~?d~T OF HIGPf~AYS TO DO THE <br />ENGI~;~;M~ING ~k~D CONSTRUCTION WORK FOR A hug BRIDGE OVER THE WES~ <br />BRANCH OF THE ELIZABETH R!VKq. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the existing West Norfolk Bridge is incapable of carr~y- <br />i~g existing and projected~ traffic; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Virgir~ia Department of~Highwa~ys and the Southeastern <br />Virginia Regior~l Plarming Commission have adopted a Regional Highway <br />Plan for the Southeastern Virginia Area; and <br /> <br /> WHHkREAS, the said Regional Hzighway Plan calls for the construc- <br />tion of a high level bridge acrosa the Western Branch of the Elizabeth <br />River in the vicinity of the existing West Norfolk Bridge. <br /> <br /> Now, TH]EREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmeuth that the City of Portsmouth hereb~ requests the Virginia <br />Department of Highways to begin the engineerir~ work and the cohstruc- <br />tion of a new high level bridge over the Western Brmuch of the Elizabeth <br />P.~ver together vM_th the necessar~y approaches thereto. <br /> <br />' BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that l~mits of the proposed bridge are <br />hereby determined to be as follows: ~.~ae project shall have as its <br />eastern terminus an approach road beginning approximately at the inter- <br />section of Douglas Avenue mud Bayview Boulevard in the City of Portsmouth <br />and as its western terminus beginning approximately at the interseczion <br />of the West Norfolk Road with the right of way of the Norfolk, Framklin <br />and Danville F~ilroad Company. The northern approach road located at <br />the western terminus of the proposed bridge shall follow, wherever <br />possible, the alignment of the proposed eastbound entrance ra~p of the <br />Western Freeway at approximately stations ~30 to 345 as shmma .on pages. <br />70-71 of Volume II of the Southeastern Virginia Regional Plsm~aing Study <br />prepared by Wilbur Smith and Associates. The proposed project limits <br />are more particularly sho,~aa on that certain plan prepared by the City <br />of Portsmouth Department of Traffic Engineering~ a copy of which is <br />attached hereto, identifie~ as Addendum "A" and hereby made a p~rt-hereof. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virgioia, at <br />a meeting held Jmuuary 9, !968. ~ <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
