53 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION TO ENDORSE THE PRESERVATION OF THE 1846 COURT- <br />HOUSE LOCATED ON THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF COURT AND HIGH STREETS <br />AND TO ENCOUF~AGE THE USE OF SUCH BUILDING AND ITS SURROUNDING <br />PROPERTY AS A CULTU~J~ AND FINE ARTS CENTER FOR THE CITY OF <br />PORTSMOUTH. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS~ the 1846 Courthouse of the City of Portsmouth <br />has historic significance as well as outstanding merit as a dis- <br />tinguished example of early public architecture; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the surrounding park like setting is of <br />particular enhancement to the City of Portsmouth as an important <br />civic design element; and <br /> <br />cluded in <br />and <br /> <br />~EREAS, the building and setting are presently in- <br />the State and Federal registry of Historic structures; <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the preservation and use of such courthouse <br />is highly desirable and'of benefit to the City of Portsmouth. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREF. ORE, BE IT RESOLVED that in order to pre- <br />serve this tangible reminder of the past for the future enjoy- <br />ment of the citizens of Portsmouth, the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth hereby strongly endors'es all efforts to preserve <br />and protect said courthcuse and it,s surrounding properties. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth strongly encourages the use of such building and <br />property as a cultural and fine arts center for the City. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth hereby directs the Museum and Fine Arts Commission <br />to explore and utilize all possible methods of preserving and <br />using said courthouse in themanner and for the purposes herein- <br />above stated. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, at a meeting held September 12, 1972. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
