RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF VIRGINIA TO <br />A~END THE CHARTER OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Sections 15.1-835 and 15.1-912 of the <br />Code of Virginia, 1950, as ~amended~ provide for the amend- <br />ment of the City Charter upon the holding of a public hear- <br />ing and the request of the City Council to the General <br />Assembly; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City Council is of the opinion that <br />certain amendments to the Charter of the City of Portsmouth <br />are necessary and desirable at this time and has held the <br />public hearing required by law to consider such amendments. <br /> NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the <br /> City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that the City Attorney is hereby <br /> directed to prepare and transmit to the General Assembly, <br /> together with certified copies of this resolution, drafts <br /> of bills amending the Charter of the City of Portsmouth by <br /> amending Sections 10.O1, 10.O2 and 10.O9 thereof to read as <br /> follows: <br /> <br /> Section 10.O1. Petition for Initative. <br /> (a) Any proposed ordinance, including any ordinance <br /> for the repeal or amendment of an existing ordinance may be <br /> submitted to the council by petition signed by electors equal <br /> in number to at least thirty per centum of the electors e~b~e <br /> ~ v~e voti'ng for governor in the last preceding <br /> gubernatoria~ election. S~ch petition shall contain the proposed <br /> ordinance in full. <br /> (b) The petition shall be substantially in the <br /> following form: <br /> To the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia: <br /> We, the undersigned, qualified electors of this city, <br /> respectfully petition your honorable body to ordain the follow- <br /> ing ordinance: <br /> Signature of Elector Street Address Date Signed <br /> <br />(c) The execution of the petition by an elector shall <br /> <br /> <br />
