A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND HONORING JUSTICE LA~ENCE W. I'ANSON iN ANTICIPATION OF HIS IMMINENT ELEVATION TO THE POSITION OF CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT OF VIRGINIA. ~{EREAS, Justice Lawrence W. I'Anson, a native and life- long resident of Portsmouth, has served the City .of Portsmouth in many capacities including Commonwealth's Attorney and Judge of the Court of Hustings; and WHEREAS, Justice I'Anson's public service also includes sixteen distinguished years as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia; and ¥~ER~AS, Justice I'Anson has made outstanding contribu- tions to the civic life of Portsmouth and State of Virginiaf parti- cularly in the areas of higher education~ philanthropy and the work of the organized bar; and W~EREAS, Justice I'Anson will shortly ass~mme the posi- tion of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that this Council does hereby recog- nize and honor Justice Lawrence W. I'Anson for his long record of distinguished public service and does express pleasure that so able and honorable a man will continue to serve the citizens of this state as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Council does hereby ex- press the esteem and admiration which all citizens of Portsmouth hold for Justice I'Anson. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Council hereby expresses its congratulations and best wishes to Justice i'Anson on this aus- picious occasion. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be, and he hereby is, directed to cause this resolution to be spread upon the minutes of this council and a duly attested copy, ~uitab!y framed, be presented to Justice Lawrence W.
