13 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION REQUESTING~THE STATE HIGHWAY CO~.~4ISSION TO USE <br />FUNDS ALLOCATED TO THE CITIES COMPRISING TF~ TIDEWATER TRANS- <br />PORTATION DISTRICT FOR THE PURCHASE OF BUSES AND ANCILLARY <br />FACILITIES FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYST~%IS. <br /> <br /> ~HEREAS, the State Highway Commission may allocate <br />funds in urban corridors for aid to mass transit facilities <br />in accordance with the provisions of Section 33.1-46.1 of the <br />Code of Virginia (1950); and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the State Highway Department has estimated <br />the need for Aid to Mass Transit for the Ten-Year Highway <br />Fiscal Program, 1972-73 through 1981-82, for the Suffolk Dis- <br />trict to be $40,000,000, thus committing the State Highway <br />Commission to allocate this amount of prL~ary and urban funds <br />to specific transit projects during this period; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the 1973 session of the General Assembly <br />enacted an amendment to the Code of Virginia that allowed the <br />State Highway Commission, at the request of local governing <br />bodies, to use funds allocated for urban highways to aid the <br />transportation district of which they are units in the purchase <br />of buses and ancillary facilities for public transit systems; <br />and <br /> <br /> W~REAS, the Tidewater Transportation Commission <br />has an immediate and critical need for funds to purchase buses <br />and ancillary facilities so as to preserve, restore, and expand <br />public, transportation within the~Tidewater Transportation Dis- <br />trict, which is composed of the Cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, <br />Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the utilization of funds for aid to mass <br />transit will not cause the delay, postponement, deferral, or <br />elimination of any single highway improv~ent project currently <br />programmed within the Tidewater Transportation District. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the <br />City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that in accordance with the pro- <br />visions of Section 33.1-46.1 of the Code of Virginia (1950), the <br />State Highway Commission is requested to use approximately <br />Six Million ($6,000,000.) Dollars of urban highway funds allocated <br />or to be allocated within the Cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Ports- <br />mouth and Virginia Beach to aid the Tidewater Transportation <br />Connnission in the purchase of buses and ancillary facilities for <br />public transit systems to be operated within the Tidewater Trans- <br />portation District. <br /> <br />Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Vir- <br /> <br /> <br />
