A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE OPPOSITION OF Ti~E COUNCIL OF THE <br />CITY OF PORTSMOUTII TO ANY EXPANSION OR UNNECESSARY PROLONGA- <br />TION OF THE USE OF CRANEY ISLAND LANDFILL AND STATING THE <br />POLICY OF CITY COUNCIL FOR FUTURE USE OF SAID AR~. <br /> <br /> W~EREAS, the Craney Island Landfill is located with- <br />in the boundaries of the City of Portsmouth; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, plans for continued utilization of Craney <br />Island as a landfill area seriously jeopardize the future eco- <br />nomic health of the City of Portsmouth; and <br /> <br /> ~[EREAS, the economic well-being of the City of Ports- <br />mouth can be protected only by the earliest practicable utiliza- <br />tion of the landfill area as a site for industrial development; <br />and <br /> <br /> W~R~AS, the Craney Island Study Commission has sub- <br />mitted a report to this council calling for additional studies <br />to be made prior to the making of any other com~mitments, for the <br />landfill area. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the <br />City of Portsmouth, Virginia: <br /> <br /> 1. That this council does hereby approve and endorse <br />the report submitted to it by the Craney island Study Con~ission <br />on July 9, 1974, and specifically supports the concept of making <br />additional studies before any further use of Craney Island is <br />proved. <br /> <br /> 2. That no expansion of the landfill either u~ard <br />or to the west, should be permitted unless and until all appli- <br />cable environmental standards have been completely satisfied <br />and all pertinent environmental procedures have been strictly <br />complied with. <br /> <br /> 3. That this council further declares that use of <br />Craney Island as a fill area should be terminated at the earliest <br />opportunity and that the whole of such area should be conveyed to <br />the City of Portsmouth to be utilized as a site for industrial <br />development, such utilization to be accomplished with dispatch. <br /> <br /> 4. That the City Manager be~ and he hereby is, di- <br />rected to carefully monitor the administrative disposition of <br />this matter by Federal agencies, with full authority to present <br />the views of council on this matter at such times and to such <br />agencies as prudence may dictate. <br /> <br /> <br />
