A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE POSITION OF PORTSMOUTH CITY COUNCIL <br />ON THE PROPOSED NEW HODGES FERRY BRIDGE. <br /> <br /> ~EREAS, the Department of Highways & Transportation <br />of the State of Virginia contemplates the preparation of plans <br />for construction of a new bridge carrying State Route 337 over <br />the western branch of the Elizabeth River (Hodges Ferry Bridge); <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Portsmouth has previously sup- <br />ported the concept of a new bridgo by its resolution of Novem- <br />ber 27, 1973; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the proposed new structure could be built <br />either south or north of the present bridge; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the proposed north schem~ (with a retaining <br />wall to protect the house located on the south side of Route <br />337) would minimize the problems of house relocation and other <br />property damage and would thus be a more economical solution <br />to the problem o~ bridge relocation. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by %he Council of the <br />City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that this council supports the <br />construction of the new Hodges Ferry Bridge along the north <br />routm, with the new bridge to be located as close as possible <br />to the existing structure. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURT}tER RESOLVED that this council is compri%ted <br />to provide fifteen percent (15%) of the funds necessary to con- <br />struct such portion of the ~pproach to said bridge as is located <br />within the City of Portsmouth; provided, that the co~i~m~.ent <br />recited in this clause shall be expressly contingent upon the <br />selection of the north location as the site of the new structure <br />to reduce property damage on each side of the approach as <br />stated by the Department of Highways and Transportation. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that council's support of %he <br />new Hodges Ferry Bridge is not intended and should not be con- <br />strued a~ a diminution of support for the new West Norfolk <br />Bridge, i~asmuch as the latter must retain the highest priority <br />for construction at the earliest possible d~te. <br /> <br /> BE iT FURT~{ER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be, and <br />he hereby is; authorized and directed to forward a certified <br />copy of this resolution to the Department of Highways and Trans- <br />portation. <br /> <br /> <br />
