A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE POSITION OF PORTSMOUTH CITY COUNCIL ON THE PROPOSED NEW HODGES FERRY BRIDGE. ~EREAS, the Department of Highways & Transportation of the State of Virginia contemplates the preparation of plans for construction of a new bridge carrying State Route 337 over the western branch of the Elizabeth River (Hodges Ferry Bridge); and WHEREAS, the City of Portsmouth has previously sup- ported the concept of a new bridgo by its resolution of Novem- ber 27, 1973; and WHEREAS, the proposed new structure could be built either south or north of the present bridge; and WHEREAS, the proposed north schem~ (with a retaining wall to protect the house located on the south side of Route 337) would minimize the problems of house relocation and other property damage and would thus be a more economical solution to the problem o~ bridge relocation. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by %he Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that this council supports the construction of the new Hodges Ferry Bridge along the north routm, with the new bridge to be located as close as possible to the existing structure. BE IT FURT}tER RESOLVED that this council is compri%ted to provide fifteen percent (15%) of the funds necessary to con- struct such portion of the ~pproach to said bridge as is located within the City of Portsmouth; provided, that the co~i~m~.ent recited in this clause shall be expressly contingent upon the selection of the north location as the site of the new structure to reduce property damage on each side of the approach as stated by the Department of Highways and Transportation. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that council's support of %he new Hodges Ferry Bridge is not intended and should not be con- strued a~ a diminution of support for the new West Norfolk Bridge, i~asmuch as the latter must retain the highest priority for construction at the earliest possible d~te. BE iT FURT~{ER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be, and he hereby is; authorized and directed to forward a certified copy of this resolution to the Department of Highways and Trans- portation.
