35 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE ~CITY OF NORFOLK FOR <br />ATTRACTING-NORFOLK SOUTHERN CORPORATION TO THE CITY <br />OF NORFOLK- AND THE TIDEWATER Ai~EA. <br /> <br /> WHERF~AS, Norfolk and Western Railway and Southern <br />Railway have merged to become the Norfolk Southern Corp- <br />oration; and <br /> <br /> WH~EREkS, the merged corporation has chosen the <br />City of Norfolk as the location of the corporate head- <br />quarters for the merged Norfolk Southern Corporation; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the location of this unified rail system <br />service in the Tidewater area will attract new industry <br />and encourage existing industry to expand; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this cons~!idated rail service will farther <br />generate employment opportunities and economic growth for <br />the City of Norfolk and the entire Tidewater area including <br />the City of Portsmouth. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of <br />the City of Portsmout~ wishes to express its congratulations <br />to Mayor Thomas and the members of the Norfolk City Council <br />as well as the other officials who participated in attract- <br />lng Norfolk 8Quthern Corporation to the City of Norfolk <br />and the enti~e Tidewater area. <br /> <br /> BE IT ~'URTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be, and <br />she hereby is, directed to forward copies of this resolution <br />to the Honorable Vincent J.
