12 A RRSOLUTION REQUESTING THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE TO RECONSIDER THE USE OF THE POSTmaRK "TIDEWATER ViRGIN~A~'~. WHEREAS, the United States POs%al Set'vice has announced that all mail processed from the seven (7) cities around Tidewater VA"; and Hampton Roads will be postmaarked" WHEREAS, this Postmark as presently designated is historically and geographically inaccurate, th~ term Tidewater being properly applicable historicaliy and geo- graphically to all of Virginia east of the fall line; and WHEREAS, the Council of the iCity of Portsmouth favors the use of individual postmarks for each of the cities located around Hampton Roads, but in the alternative, would suggest %hat the term "Hampton Roads" is more properly descriptive of the seven (7) cities involved in this matter; and WHEREAS, the ~nited States ~os%al Service has indicated that it would consider a change mn this desmgnation if sufficient Justification therefor was present and there existed a broad consensus in favor of some other name. NOW, THEREFORE, BE ~T RESOLVED by the Council of the City of'Portsmouth that it~ requests that the gnlted States Postal Service reconsider its designation of 'the postmark "Tidewater VA" for the seven ~7) cities around'Hampton Roads and establish ind±~idual pos~marks, or, in the~alt-ernative, adopt the designation "Hampton Roads" as the postLmark Zor these cities. BE IT ~URTHER RESOLVED that the Cit~ Clerk be,~ and she hereby is, lnstruc'zed to 'forward a copy~of -this resolution to the mayors and, Norfolk, Newport N, request that they, Adopted by th, at a meeting held ~ouncils of the cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, ~s, Suffolk and Virginia Beach~ With the ~ons±der a similar resolution.
