Section 23-110. Applicability of division to emergency <br /> vehicle. <br /> <br /> (a) The speed limitations set forth in this <br />chapter shall not.apply to vehicles when operated ~ith <br />due regard for safety under the direction of the police <br />in the chase or apprehension of violators of the law, or <br />of persons charged with or suspected of any such <br />violations, or in response to emergency calls, or in <br />testing the accuracy of the radio microwave or other <br />91ectrical devices specified in Section 46.1-198 of the <br />Code of Virginia, nor to fire department vehicles when <br />traveling in response to an emergency call, nor to <br />ambulances and rescue vehicles when traveling in <br />emergencies, nor to regional detention center vehicles. <br /> <br /> (b) These exemptions, hereinbefore granted to such <br />a moving vehicle, shall apply only when the driver of <br />such vehicle displays a flashing, blinking or <br />alternating emergency light or lights, and sounds a <br />siren, bell, exhaust, whistle, or air horn designed to <br />give automatically intermittent signals, as may be <br />reasonably necessary, and only when there is in force <br />and effect for such vehicle either (i) standard <br />automobile liability insurance covering injury or death <br />to any one person in 'the sum of at least one hundred <br />thousand dollars ($100,000.00) in any one accident, and <br />subject to the limit for one person, to a limit of three <br />hundred thousand dollars ($300,000.00) because of bodily <br />injury to or death of two (2) or more persons in any one <br />accident, and to a limit of ten thousand dollars <br />($10,000.00) because of injury to or destruction of <br />property of others in any one accident, or (ii) a <br />certificate of self-insurance issued pursuant to Section <br />46.1-395 of the Code of Virginia. Such exemptions shall <br />not, however, protect the driver of any such vehicle <br />~rom criminal prosecution for conduct constituting <br />reckless disregard of the safety of persons and <br />property. Nothing in this section shall be construed to <br />release the driver of any such vehicle from civil <br />liability for failure to use reasonable care in such <br />operation. <br /> <br />Section 23-117. Driving on highway laned for traffic. <br /> <br /> Whenever any highway has been divided into clearly <br />marked lanes for traffic, drivers of vehicles shall obey <br />the following regulations: <br /> <br /> <br />
