17 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO SUBMIT AN <br />APPLICATION FOR FUNDING TO THE VIRGINIA COM~ISSION FOR THE <br />ARTS. <br /> <br /> ~HEREAS, the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, <br />has created the Museum and Fine Arts Commission to serve as <br />the official consultant and advisor to the City Government <br />and City council on all Museums and Fine Arts activities, <br />programs and facilities, and authorize the appointment of a <br />director and staff by the City Manager to coordinate the <br />City's cultural activities; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Virginia Commission for the Arts provides <br />funding to enhance local cultural programs; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Portsmouth is eligible to submit <br />grant applications for funding pursuant to regulations <br />governing the administration and use of such funds; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City is eligible to apply for a Five <br />Thousand Dollar C$5,000) grant for general operating expenses <br />of the Museums due to an annual increase in local contri- <br />butions for arts activities; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City is eligible to apply for a Ten Thousand <br />Dollar ($10,000) grant for a visual arts exhibit to present <br />to thecommun±~y the cQmplete works of a prom. inent Tidewater <br />artist. <br /> <br /> N0~, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the <br />Gity of Portsmouth, Virginia, that the City Manager be, and <br />he hereby is, authorized to submit an application for funding <br />to provide support for general operating expenses for local <br />arts activities, and to submit an application for funding a <br />major retrospective exhibit of the career and art works of <br />Charles Sibley, one of Tldewater's most prominent artist and <br />arts educator. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia at a meeting held February 28, 1984. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
