85 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE USS CORAL SEA _~ND ITS COMtViANDING <br />OFFICER AND CREW FOR THE SERVICES RENDERED TO THE CITY AND <br />ITS CITIZENS. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, <br />recggnizes and acknowledges that the USS Coral Sea is an im- <br />portant element of our national defense, and without any further <br />contribution, would be worthy of recognition; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, while the USS Coral Sea was undergoing an over- <br />haul at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Captain <br />Jeremy D. Taylor announced as a gesture of good will, the <br />initiation of community service projects for the officers and <br />crew of the USS Coral Sea; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the officers and crew of the USS Coral Sea in- <br />itiated the "Safe and Sound Program" to provide entertainment <br />and emergency radio communication facilities in the downto%~ <br />tunnel, undertoek a lamp post painting project in the Olde <br />Towne section of Portsmouth, and provided guides for the <br />Seawall Festival; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in addition thereto, individual crew members <br />from the USS Coral Sea undertook numerous co~mmunity service <br />projects; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Portsmouth has received over $140,636 <br />in labor as a result of these endeavors and, more importantly, <br />developed a warm appreciation for the crew of the USS Coral Sea <br />as representatives of "Our Navy".' <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE tT RESOLVED that the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, recognizes the services performed by <br />the crew of the USS Coral Sea, and extends its appreciation to <br />Captain Jeremy D. Taylor and those members of the crew who par- <br />ticipated for the services rendered to our City and its citizens, <br />and in further recognition thereof, formally adopts the USS Coral <br />Sea and designates this City aC it honorary home port. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that as a further token of our appre- <br />ciation the City, in cooperation with the Portsmouth Council of <br />the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, invites the crew members <br />who have participated in the community service programs to a <br />recognition picnic on September 19, 1984 at Sleepy Hole Park <br />for an afternoon of food, fun, and fellowship. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City. of Portsmouth, Virginia, <br />at a meeting held August 28, 1984. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
