AN ORDINANCE TO ~_MEND THE CODE OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, <br />VIRGINIA, 1973, BY AMENDING SECTIONS 35-224 [e), 35-225 (f), <br />AND 35-226, PERTAINING TO EXEMPTION OF REAL ESTATE TAXES FOR <br />CERTAIN ELDERLY AND PERMANENTLY DISABLED PEOPLE. <br /> <br /> BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia: <br /> <br /> i. That Section 35-224 (e) of the Code of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, 1973, be amended to read as follows: <br /> <br />Section 35-224. Eligibility for exemption. <br /> <br /> (e) The total combined income from all sources for the <br />immediately preceding calendar year of the owner or owners <br />claiming tax exemption and of the owner or owner's relatives <br />or other household member living in the subject dwelling shall <br />not exceed ten thousand dollars ($10,000) providing the first <br />twenty-five hundred dollars ($2,500) of income of each relative <br />other than spouse or other household member of the owner or <br />owners who is living in the dwelling shall not be included in <br />such total.. <br /> <br /> 2. That Section 35-225 (f) of the Code of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, 1973, be amended to read as follows: <br /> <br />Section 35-225. Qaulifying for exemption. <br /> <br /> (f) The City Manager upon determ!ning good cause may <br />extend the date in which a person or persons have under sub- <br />section (a) herein, to apply for the exemption of real estate <br />taxes for certain elderly and permanently disabled people if <br />such person had qualified for such exemption in the immediate <br />past tax year. <br /> <br /> 3. That Section 35-226 of the Code of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, 1973, be amended to read as follows: <br /> <br />Section 35-226. Amount of exemption. <br /> <br /> The person or persons qualifying for and claiming exemption <br />shall have exempted that percentage of the real estate tax <br />levied on the qualifying dwelling set forth in the following <br />schedule: <br /> <br /> <br />
