17 RESOLUTION WHEREAS, on the 17th day of December 1990 death brought to a close the active life of Lawrence W. I'Anson, a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia, and resident of our City; and WHEREAS~ Lawrence W. I'Anson served the City of Portsmouth and its citizens with distinstion as Commonwealth's Attorney, Judge of the Court of Hustings for the City of Portsmouth, Chairman of the Beazley and Frederick Foundations and Sunday School Teacher; and WHEREAS, Lawrence W. I'Anson served the City of Portsmouth and the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia as Justice and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia; and WHEREAS, Lawrence W. citizens ~s a founder and for State Courts; and I'Anson s~rved the Nation and its president of the National Center WHEREAS, Lawrence W. I'Anson lived an exemplary life filled with monumental achievements all accomplished with patience and clarity of mind that looked to the future while soundly based on the best precedents of the past; and WHEREAS, this City has suffered a great loss in the passing of Lawrence W. I'Anson and join with his family, friends and associates in mourning his death. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT City of Portsmouth, Virginia, acting for the citizens of extended to the family of the RESOLVED by the Counci~ of the- that the~ sympathy of this body,- this City be, and hereby is, late Lawrence W. I'Anson. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, tha~ this resolution~be spread upon the Minutes of the Council, and that a copy thereof be presented to his family in recognition of his service and respected stature in this Community. -Adopted by the Council 'of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, at~ a meeting held March 12, 1991. ~este: City Clerk
