12 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE SUPPORT OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF PORTSMOUTH FOR NAMING THE 1-664 BRIDGE TUNNEL, THE "U.S.S. <br />MONITOR - C.S.S. VIRGINIA MEMORIAL BRIDGE TUNNEL." <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in 1861-62, in Gosport Navy Yard in the City of <br />Portsmouth, the U.S.S. Merrimac, a partly burned U.S. steam <br />frigate, was converted into the C.S.S. Virginia, the world's <br />first armored ship; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the C.S.S. Virginia and the U.S.S. Monitor, a <br />federal ironclad, forever changed the course of naval warfare <br />and ushered in the era of iron and steam by doing battle on <br />March 9, 1862; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the new 1-664 bridge-tunnel is being built <br />across Hampton Roads, the scene of that historic naval <br />engagement. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, that it hereby expresses its <br />enthusiastic support for naming the new 1-664 Bridge-Tunnel, <br />the "U.S.S. Monitor - C.S.S. Virginia Memorial Bridge Tunnel." <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be, and she <br />hereby is, directed to forward a copy of this resolution to <br />the Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Transportation. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, at a meeting held February 12, 1991. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
