A RESOLUTION TO DESIGNATE DAVID JEDDIE SMITH POET LAUREATE OF
<br />THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA.
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, David Jeddie Smith "Dave Smith" is a native of
<br />Portsmouth, Virginia; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, Dave Smith is a graduate of Churchland High School
<br />and of the University of Virginia; the University of Southern
<br />Illinois, and Ohio University, and attended the College of
<br />William and Mary; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, Dave Smith has taught at Poquoson High School,
<br />Christopher Newport College, Thomas Nelson Community College,
<br />the College of William and Mary, Western Michigan University,
<br />Cottey College, the University of Utah, the University of
<br />Florida, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the State
<br />University of New York; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, Dave Smith has served as editor of the Sou'wester
<br />magazine, the founding editor of Back Door magazine, the poetry
<br />editor of the Rocky Mountain Review, and a columnist in the
<br />American Poetry Review, and currently serves as editor of the
<br />Southern Review; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, Dave Smith received the Kansas Quarterly prize,
<br />the Breadloaf Writers Conference John Atherton Fellowship, the
<br />Borestone Mountain Award, a Fellowship from the National
<br />Endowment for the Arts, the Southern Poetry Review prize, the
<br />American Academy award, the Portland Review prize, Lyndhurst
<br />Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, Dave Smith has been twice nominated for the
<br />Pulitzer Prize; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, Dave Smith has contributed significantly to
<br />American poetry in general and Southern poetry in specific
<br />through publications such as Bull Island, Mean Rufus Throw Down,
<br />~he Fisherman's Whore, Cumberland Station, In Dark Sudden With
<br />Light, Goshawk Antelope, Dream Flights, Blue Spruce, Homage to
<br />Edgar Allan Poe, In The House of the Judge, Gray Soldiers,
<br />Roundhouse Voices, Selected and New Poems, and Cuba Night; and
<br />by editing and by writing the introduction to The Essential Poe;
<br />and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, Dave Smith has enriched our literary heritage by
<br />writing the novel, Onliness; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, Dave Smith has written both short stories and
<br />essays.
