20 - <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION ~ECOGNI~Z~NG THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF LIEUTENANT <br />GENERAL ALONZO EARL SHORT, JR., UNITED STATES ARMY. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Lieutenant Genera~Alonzo Earl Short, Jr., who <br />was born on January 27, 1939, educated in The Portsmouth <br />Public Schools, graduated from Virginia State College with a <br />Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Arts, and graduated <br />from New York Institute of Technology with a Masters Degree in <br />Business Administration has brought honor to himself, his <br />family and his hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia by honorably <br />serving our country as a member of the United States Army for <br />thirty years; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, though he presently serves as Commanding General <br />for the United States Army Information Systems, which is a <br />sprawling telecommunications network that connects Army bases <br />in fifteen countries worldwide, General Short attributes the <br />encouragement he received from Norcom coach Walter "Doc" <br />Hurley as having helped him excel in college and in the Army; <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, General Short's command is the largest military <br />telecommunication system in the world and was utilized as the <br />communication backbone of Operation Desert Storm, keeping <br />soldiers in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia in constant touch with <br />allied commanders and processed tens of thousands of messages <br />each day and prompted Generals Colin Powell and Norman <br />Schwarzkopf to state that this communication system was <br />invaluable to our allied success; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the stature that General Short has attained in <br />this community and in the military community by his exemplary <br />life and monumenta~3~chieveme~ts are well recognized. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of %he City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, that this resolution be spread upon <br />the minutes of the Council and that a copy thereof be <br />presented to Lieutenant General Alonzo Earl Short, Jr. in <br />recognition of his service and respected stature in this <br />community. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, at a meeting held February 11, 1992. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />C~ity Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
