44 <br /> <br />REsOLuTIoN <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, more than twenty-eight Portsmouth-area churches and <br /> one mission have organized a planning committee for an Area-Wide <br /> Crusade to take place in our city on September 13-17, 1992; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, "God honors Planning" along with agreement and <br />%~interest between all parties involved if there is to be unity in <br />~developing the organization required for a successful crusade; and <br /> WHEREAS, working with the Portsmouth Baptist Association, <br /> Rev. Alan Moor, Dr. Skip Hathaway, and Rev. Bob Baker have <br /> organized an Executive Committee that consists of Rev. Allen <br /> McFarland, Mrs. Lue English, Captain Art Penhale, Rev. Charles <br /> Bowens, Rev. James Harris, Rev. Neal Johnson, Rev. Tom Potter, and <br /> Sheila Powell Pittman; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Dr. Bailey E. Smith has been called to serve as the <br />speaker for five crusade meetings. Dr. Smith has been hailed by <br />U. S. News Today & World Report as a "Leader;" by Christianity <br />Today as an "Inerrancy Superstar;" Newsweek calls him "a capable <br />and growing leader;" Time "a formidable figure, a firey red-haired <br />old style prairie stemwinder;" and in Los Angeles, "his oratorical <br />skills have him one of Baptists more popular preachers;" and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this evangelistic crusade involves any and all <br />denominations in our area and will include all races; with the <br />major thrust being to unite the people of Portsmouth for things <br />that are good and wholesome and to bring in people who can <br />effectively address issues such as drug abuse; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, plans are pending for a Portsmouth Rally to be held <br />on September 12 at Frank D. Lawrence Stadium, and the September <br />Crusade to be held in the Gym at Churchland High School; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the community healing~project will attract three to <br />five thousand people each~night, wi{k specially trained "~eams" <br />scheduled to go into the housing projects of Portsmouth to work <br />with the needy and the lost in those areas, as well as to <br />encourage them to take advantage of the transportation <br />opportunities for them to attend the Crusade and possibly change <br />their lives; <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the sincere appreciation <br />and support of this Council goes out to those that are working to <br />develop a successful crusade. Further, our hope and earnest <br />prayer is that the citizens of this community will respond and <br />participate in the activities planned. The City of Portsmouth <br />will indeed be the beneficiary of the community healing that can <br />take place with proper support and God's blessing. <br /> <br /> <br />
