44 REsOLuTIoN WHEREAS, more than twenty-eight Portsmouth-area churches and one mission have organized a planning committee for an Area-Wide Crusade to take place in our city on September 13-17, 1992; and WHEREAS, "God honors Planning" along with agreement and %~interest between all parties involved if there is to be unity in ~developing the organization required for a successful crusade; and WHEREAS, working with the Portsmouth Baptist Association, Rev. Alan Moor, Dr. Skip Hathaway, and Rev. Bob Baker have organized an Executive Committee that consists of Rev. Allen McFarland, Mrs. Lue English, Captain Art Penhale, Rev. Charles Bowens, Rev. James Harris, Rev. Neal Johnson, Rev. Tom Potter, and Sheila Powell Pittman; and WHEREAS, Dr. Bailey E. Smith has been called to serve as the speaker for five crusade meetings. Dr. Smith has been hailed by U. S. News Today & World Report as a "Leader;" by Christianity Today as an "Inerrancy Superstar;" Newsweek calls him "a capable and growing leader;" Time "a formidable figure, a firey red-haired old style prairie stemwinder;" and in Los Angeles, "his oratorical skills have him one of Baptists more popular preachers;" and WHEREAS, this evangelistic crusade involves any and all denominations in our area and will include all races; with the major thrust being to unite the people of Portsmouth for things that are good and wholesome and to bring in people who can effectively address issues such as drug abuse; and WHEREAS, plans are pending for a Portsmouth Rally to be held on September 12 at Frank D. Lawrence Stadium, and the September Crusade to be held in the Gym at Churchland High School; and WHEREAS, the community healing~project will attract three to five thousand people each~night, wi{k specially trained "~eams" scheduled to go into the housing projects of Portsmouth to work with the needy and the lost in those areas, as well as to encourage them to take advantage of the transportation opportunities for them to attend the Crusade and possibly change their lives; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the sincere appreciation and support of this Council goes out to those that are working to develop a successful crusade. Further, our hope and earnest prayer is that the citizens of this community will respond and participate in the activities planned. The City of Portsmouth will indeed be the beneficiary of the community healing that can take place with proper support and God's blessing.
