Industrial engineers at NADEP study
production operations, work flow, and plant Characteristics m
various locations within the activity.
Mechanical Engineers. Mechanical engineering personnel
within the Production Engineering Department are given a
,,vide variety of assignments, cortsisting of specification
writing fm the pm-chase of commercial machinery and
equipment; design of building or shop alterations: and design
and development of process environmental systems,
pnenmanc and fluid services, pollution*abatemant
· ~quipment. test equipment, safely devices, and heating and
air-conditioning systems.

TRAINING
Entry-level engineers m NADEP are given assigrmtents
under the supervision and guidance of senior-leval engmeem.
They investigate problems and formulate solutions on an
individual basis, with their work being reviewed by the
journeyman engineer. The) start with independent work on
part of a particular project and, depending on individual
capability, ~'ogress in assuming additional responsibility for
a variety of project components. While a new engineer is in a
training prqgram, the assignments are both developmental
and specifidally hands-on in nature. Individual responsibility
is given quickly to each new engineer because of the demand
for engineering expertise in the day-to-da'y industrial
operations of the plant. Senior-level engineers have total
responsibility for an entire project and often work on several
projects simultaneously.

THE ORGANIZATION AS EMPLOYER
NADEP recognizes both the need and the resultant value of
continued education. Engineers may be reimbursed 100% of
their-tuition costs for rolated graduate courses. Several
institutions in the Tidewater area offer excellent
opportunities /or further education. Various government
mining courses are held in all fields of engineering at
~IADEP. and special training is ~Xluired for all new
~eervisors. Higber4eval training for manngetial positions is
~lao available at the facility.
The oppommi~ for advancement beyond the GS-I 1 level
i~ excellent. SupervisoD and managerial positions, while
aro,'npetitive, m-e available. Other excellent opportunities also
~xist throughout ~ federal government.
NADEP operates under a management philosophy ~11~:1
Total Qualind Managemera (TQM), Which focuses on the
t~i'oces~s by which work g~ts done nnd views employees as
~villing collaborators in the ongoing ,effort to improve
products and services. In conjunction with TQM. NADEP

has implemented a Productivity C. rain Sharing Program. The
program provides bonus payments to employees for savings
generated as a result of better use of labor and materials and
reductions in overhead expenses.
The Naval Aviation Depot i~ ~ Equal Opportunity
employer.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RF.~PONSIBILITY
NADEP contributes to the improvement of local
environmental conditions with the industrial wastewater
Ireatment plant and new bay~oas materials storage facility.

plating, metalworking, and other industrial work and makes
it ~-afilable for the final treatment by Hampton Roads area

Fla',a~ous Materials Storage Facil/ty, comwucted for sa£ety
and materials control, allows for proper segregation of
incompatible materials, reduces hazasdoas-waste generation.
and limits unnecessary persoonel exposure.
NADEP joined local efforts to save the Chesapeake Bay
by establishing a Bay Program to identify and eliminate
soumes of pollution assoctate~i with industrial work
processes.
In addition to its contributions toward improving the
environmental conditions of the community, NADEP is an
area leader in the United Way Campaign Fond each year. It
also supports two gsoups of high school students in Jan]or
Achievement and promotes an excellent NADEP blood bank.
Area students are employed in the Summer Work Program,
and NADEP supports tbe local Soap Box Derby as well as
two Little League teams. As part of the Navy's Personal
Excellence Parmership Program, NADEP adopted a local
elementary school, providing tutoring and other volunteer

vocational education business parmership with another local
educational facility. Employees who are interested in
working with such community projects are enconmged to do
~, participation is entirely voluntary.

APPLICATION AND INFORMATION
Interested applicants should complete a Personal
Qualifications Statement (Standard Form 171), This form ~
be obtained from local offices of the Office of Personnel
Management and at local federal personnel offices.
Applicants who are unable to locate such an office should
write to the address below.
