Exhibit A
SUBMITTED BY
APPLICANT
3/20/95

To: Members of the Portsmouth City Council & Planning
Commission

From: Carol and John Braley, 420 Middle Street (owners
Tel. Office 455-3304 Home (John) 399-2398

Subject: Application for use permit (Bed and Breakfast)

If granted a use permit we plan to open a ---four to--- five bed, up
scale, bed and breakfast in our historic home located on the
northeast corner of London Blvd. and Middle Street. We have studied
the bed and breakfast ordinance and will be able to meet all
requirements and regulations. We have no desire or intention of
opening a full service restaurant and selling liquor, which we
understand, in the past. met opposition by area residents and the
Olde Towne Civic League. In fact, as members of the civic league we
announced our intentions at the March meeting where all present
were supportive, of our plans. At this meeting we requested a
official letter of support be sent to city council following the April meeting.

Our bed and breakfast wi!l be managed by Carol (Dede) Bra!ay R.N..
We anticipate that the majority of our business will be from
tourists, out of town relatives of residents and people in town for
business purposes. They will be served breakfast mornings and tea
and cookies afternoons or early evenings. It is our intention to
provide an overnight experience, in a historically significant
home, as an alternative to the accommodations at such hotels and
motels. For the tourist we hope to be able to assist them in
enjoying all the attractions Portsmouth and the surrounding area
has to offer. They will be provided personalized service such as
tours of historic Olde Towne, reservations at local restaurants and
advise on museums, specialty shops etc. For the business person
traveling to our city we hope to provide a "home away from home"
atmosphere that will support their business responsibilities and
encourage them to return frequently where they can expect to find
hospitable stress free overnight accommodations.

With the exception of adding additional private bathrooms at a
later date (presently there are four) we anticipate no major
structural changes in the interior of our home. Likewise, we see no
need to make any exterior structural changes. However, in
accordance with the B & B ordinance we will request approval of the
architectural review commission for a sign that conforms to the HDC
district requirements.

We look forward to meeting with the planning commission and city
council to answer any additional questions you may have concerning
this application.

cc: Mr. Les French, President, Olde Town Civic League

enjoying all nme a%%rac%ions Portsmouth and che surrounding area
ha= r_o offer.
