R-97-3 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, <br />VIRGINIA, ACCEPTING THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE MUSEUM AND FINE <br />ARTS COMMISSION ON THE LAYOUT AND EXHIBITS FOR PHASE II OF THE <br />CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF VIRGINIA. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Children's Museum of Virginia for many years <br />has been a center for learning and excitement for children and. <br />has attracted school children and families from this region and <br />beyond; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Children's Museum of Virginia began a new <br />era in December 1994 with new exhibits and amenities in the <br />former Leggett's building on High Street and has enhanced its <br />role as a center for children and families, as well as serving as <br />a community meeting place; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the opening of the new facilities in 1994 was, <br />conducted as Phase I, with the understanding that the second <br />floor of the building would be utilized for Phase II in the <br />future and with architectural design including an atrium and <br />other amenities for Phase II; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Lancaster antique toy and train collection <br />has been generously donated for use and display in Phase II of <br />the Children s Museum of Virginia; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Portsmouth <br />directed the Museum and Fine Arts Commission, a body appointed by <br />the City Council, to develop a process for the layout and design <br />of Phase II of the Children's Museum of Virginia; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Museum and Fine Arts Commission has used the <br />services of a design consultant, an ad hoc committee of <br />interested and qualified citizens, and several out-of-town <br />consultants qualified to advise the City of Portsmouth on the <br />development of Phase II of the Children's Museum of Virginia; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Museum and Fine Arts Commission has <br />completed its process and has unanimously adopted the <br />recommendation of its design consultant and ad hoc committee, and <br />has presented its recommendation to the City Council as a means <br />of enhancing the role of the Children's Museum of Virginia as a <br />center of learning and excitement. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, that the Council accepts the <br />recommendation of the Museum and Fine Arts Commission for the <br />layout and design of Phase II of the Children's Museum of <br />Virginia and commends the Commission for its diligence in <br />carrying out this assignment. <br /> <br /> <br />
